Milk of Magnesium & Liquid Paraffin

This compound belongs to the class of inorganic compounds known as alkaline earth metal hydroxides. These are inorganic compounds in which the largest oxoanion is hydroxide, and in which the heaviest atom not in an oxoanion is an alkaline earth metal.

Milk of magnesium and liquid paraffin is used to treat constipation. It is a laxative (osmotic type) that is thought to work by drawing water into the intestine, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestine. It is an antacid that works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach.

Pharmacodynamic Properties of Milk of Magnesium & Liquid Paraffin:

Milk of Magnesia (Magnesium Hydroxide):
It is a type of laxative known as an oral osmotic; as it works by drawing water into the colon from the body tissues surrounding it. This allows the stool to pass more easily. It can help relive heartburn sour stomach and acid indigestion.

Liquid Paraffin:
Liquid paraffin passes through the body's intestinal tract without being absorbed; it can be used as a laxative to limit the amount of water removed from the stool and ease constipation .It is also used in painful conditions of the anus and rectum such as hemorrhoids and anal fissure.

Pharmacokinetic Properties:

ABSORPTION: Magnesium hydroxide is absorbed very slowly through the small intestine.
PROTEIN BINDING: Magnesium hydroxide does not have any protein binding properties.
METABOLISM: Unless a patient is deficient in magnesium, very little is absorbed by the intestine. Magnesium hydroxide suspension is absorbed systemically and it does not undergo any metabolism as it is rapidly excreted in the urine.

Pregnant & Lacation Women:
During pregnancy this medicine should be used only when clearly needed. It should be taken under the suggestion of physician.

• Low amount of sodium in the blood
• Extreme loss of body water
• Stomach or intestine blockage

• Skin rash
• Vomiting
• Redness of skin
• Nausea
• Unpleasant mouth sensation

• Do not use without a doctor's advice if you have stomach pain, nausea ,vomiting only.
• Call your doctor at once if you have a sudden change in bowel habits that persists over a period of 2 weeks.
• Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are pregnant.
